YouTube <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DU0Sm2tLW8g\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DU0Sm2tLW8g<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maps are the loveliest way for us to see complicated <strong>geodata<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> \u201cGeomatics is the study of methods and technologies used to collect, distribute, analyse and present geographical, and spatial data, both natural and human-made\u201d.  <\/p>\n<cite>https:\/\/www.westerncape.gov.za\/infrastructure\/become-geomatics-professional<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geomatician\">geomaticians<\/a> with pen and paper (look out for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymaverick.co.za\/article\/2025-09-25-map-guru-peter-slingsbys-love-letter-to-the-cederberg\/\">Peter Slingsby<\/a> &#8216;s routes and paths in the Drakensberg and Cederberg); tech giants with a street car, creating 360-degree views, Google&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/contrib\/111894477592404042818\/reviews\/\">local leveled guides<\/a> awarding stars or Open Street Maps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openstreetmap.org\/user\/Weblearning\">volunteers<\/a>, contributing nodes, ways and relations for a  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikivoyage.org\/\">Wikivoyage <\/a>and their <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikivoyage.org\/wiki\/Wikivoyage:How_to_use_dynamic_maps\">dynamic tourist maps<\/a>. Cartographers. You make the earth beautiful. Me&#8230;I&#8217;m teaching myself about geodata. So these three posts comes with a <strong>Warning<\/strong>: This is a &#8220;brain dump&#8221;, its subject to regular revision and it might be long. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My outline for this post.  <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many ways to map a territory. Through commercially published services, by talking to people who know the terrain or by building your own map from the available data.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reading my maps (and the territory)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Three examples of general purpose maps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recipes for making general purpose maps <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Four Examples of thematic maps (family, buildings, location)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Challenge: Making a tour guide map <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Up next<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reading my maps<\/strong> (and the territory)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My maps (shared below) are not definitive. They are a starting point for dialogue. Much like a person may stop their car, and ask me for directions, and I may give them useful instructions or a pin with latitude and logitude pair <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So <em>Sho&#8217;t Left<\/em>  applies and when we are in mapping territory and you can cross a cartographic threshold. <strong>Why? <\/strong>Its important that you make sense of the landscape. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1) Map Examples:<\/strong> Three library maps  <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In these examples, I&#8217;ll take an earth centred perspective.   My <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/User:Derek_J_Moore\/dashboard_1\">Library Dashboard<\/a> contains <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/User:Derek_J_Moore\/dashboard\/Public_libraries_map\">three examples of maps<\/a> that draw on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Main_Page\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.Wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikidata:Main_Page\">English Wikipedia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openstreetmap.org\/\">Open Street Maps<\/a> (OSM) and <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/Main_Page\">Wikimedia Commons<\/a>. You will notice each map has a single library location where I have zoomed in (from continent to country to province). Here the latitude and longitude create a single node. (Choose a better sign that represents the <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/Category:Symbols_of_people_with_books\">library or reading <\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lastly, the <strong>Weltevreden Public Library Map<\/strong> (right hand side) relies on the image <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:South_Africa_Gauteng_location_map.svg\">File:South_Africa_Gauteng_location_map.svg<\/a> and an underlying layer appears when this module <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Module:Location_map\/data\/South_Africa_Gauteng\">&#8220;South Africa Gauteng&#8221;<\/a>. As opposed to the maps that only focus on location, these thematic maps are more about humans. J Naidoo map<\/strong> is about the school, the park, the sports ground, and other places where this local leader was found. The map has a numbered label and has a key below.  Both the label and the key links to another Wikipedia articles (also with maps). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clarens Festival map:<\/strong> a map about popular culture locations for those who visit Clarens. Some are linked to Wikipedia or Wikimedia pages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Parktown Mansions map<\/strong> is about the lavish homes that were built by Randlords and the blue plaques that accompany these buildings. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"518\" height=\"763\" src=\"https:\/\/weblearning.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6021\" srcset=\"https:\/\/weblearning.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-1.png 518w, https:\/\/weblearning.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-1-204x300.png 204w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> <strong>My inspiration<\/strong>:  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@nickhamman5\/video\/7504203257842257207\">Stuart<\/a> (my favourite counter-culture urban archaeologist) and Niall&#8217;s lovely work on the <a href=\"https:\/\/niallmcnulty.com\/docs\/GreyStreetLiteraryTrail.pdf\">Grey Street Literary Trail<\/a> inspired my efforts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mouseover on Map<\/strong>:  You might notice that these maps are interactive. When your mouse or pointer hovers over label, an image, location or Wikipedia article appears. This allows the reader a quick preview before they click. Now your label and the location do not have to be the same. Go to the Wikipedia page and click on the Geo link on the top right and you will find some geo-cordinates<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now if you add these degree minutes seconds co-ordinates, to a map, they might not work and you will get an error message However these degree minutes seconds<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">|lat2 = 25\u00b0&nbsp;43\u2032&nbsp;55.92\u2033&nbsp;S,&nbsp;<br>|lon2 = 28\u00b0&nbsp;9\u2032&nbsp;42.84\u2033&nbsp;E<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">can be converted into decimals to create your second location on the map. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> |lat2 =- -25.7322<br> |lon2 =28.1619<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have started to build a multi label map. Do you think that you can add your own university? Or do you want to cheat and look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/meta.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/User:Derek_J_Moore\/Universities\">code view.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thematic Maps using Wikipedia Templates<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>Scope:<\/strong>&nbsp;In the two examples below, I will show how to plot UNISA&#8217;s campuses on a web map f<\/span>ocused on South Africa. Or public libraries on a web map of Johannesburg.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These two templates have GREATLY simplified this process. Four co-ordinates will centre the South African Map<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Guide for code:<\/strong> I want to display all the South African Universities that participated in SWiP.
