I&#8217;m going to describe the workshop that I facilitated. The title &#8211;  &#8220;<strong>Ai Literacy:  Telling your Ai Stories&#8221;<\/strong>. The workshop was part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/erna-oliver_join-us-17-sept-2024-activity-7234167287518232578-yrCZ\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/erna-oliver_join-us-17-sept-2024-activity-7234167287518232578-yrCZ\">Serious Games Symposium<\/a> held on the <strong>17 September 2024<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Prior to the workshop, I asked participants to complete the following <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/2BhgJ1DPatgguaCw8\">pre-workshop survey<\/a><\/strong>. 27 participants responded and <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1boM-WEDL83XaKFawpAaVwpZgmjx54p9PjGyo7oPp4Cc\/edit?usp=sharing\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1boM-WEDL83XaKFawpAaVwpZgmjx54p9PjGyo7oPp4Cc\/edit?usp=sharing\">their responses are collected here<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The starting point for the morning&#8217;s session was an etherpad,  a &#8220;synchronized notepad&#8221; that would be used for note-taking and collaboration. I first wanted to give workshop participants the experience of a structured conversation. Unlike Zoom chat, website  chatbots or Generative Pretrained Transformers (Chat GPT), where a machine or a moderator determines what is seen or said. I wanted people to be free to understand and respond to questions. To use the etherpad to make their thinking visible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also explained that I would be wearing two hats. My authentic &#8220;Parisian Beret&#8221;, worn by hipsters and revolutionaries. Or my local 100% wool beret. Sold by Woolworths. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Participants were invited to create and tell two stories on a blog. One story would be Ai generated, while the other would be their authentic voice. I hoped to allow participants the opportunity to converse about and understand the many (dis)functions that come with &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s00146-020-01024-9\">autonomous systems<\/a>&#8221; especially when doing digital teaching. Ask questions as to whether ed-tech does deliver? And perhaps let us collectively gather our thoughts with conceptual tools that allow everyone to take agency, act and tell their own authentic story.<\/strong><\/p>\n<cite>Derek Moore &#8211; Workshop Facilitator<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ai is contested territory, and some people sometimes get quite upset when Ai is discussed. We all agreed to a simple <a href=\"https:\/\/weblearning.co.za\/blog\/kiff\/\">Code of Conduct<\/a> that foregrounded our interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kindness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intentional use of Resources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fediverse First<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fellowship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ai Literacy Task: Telling Two stories<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My workshop began suddenly. The opening speaker did not pitch. I leapt in willingly, and  introduce participants to the performance task. I asked them to tell two stories about Ai on a blogging platform.<br>The one story would be generated by Ai<br>The other story would be told directly by the narrator.<br>The workshop would be performative. But with the emergence of new forms of media and platforms (like blogs), some have found it difficult to draw lines between reading, speaking, watching and writing (Korhonen, 2010) and thought an expanded understanding of &#8220;literacies&#8221; was needed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I decided to begin our exploration of the topic of &#8220;Ai Literacy&#8221; in San Franciso. This absurdity happens most of the day. <a title=\"robot\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/robot?refer=embed\" rel=\"noopener\">#robot<\/a> <a title=\"car\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/car?refer=embed\" rel=\"noopener\">#car<\/a> <a title=\"cars\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/cars?refer=embed\" rel=\"noopener\">#cars<\/a> <a title=\"carsoftiktok\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/carsoftiktok?refer=embed\" rel=\"noopener\">#carsoftiktok<\/a>  <a title=\"fyp\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/fyp?refer=embed\" rel=\"noopener\">#fyp<\/a> <a title=\"selfdriving\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/selfdriving?refer=embed\" rel=\"noopener\">#selfdriving<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"\u266c Comedy Scenes - Comical, stupid, odd, lovely (Drumless)(1441321) - Ponetto\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/music\/Comedy-Scenes-Comical-stupid-odd-lovely-Drumless-1441321-7234217459228985345?refer=embed\" rel=\"noopener\">\u266c Comedy Scenes &#8211; Comical, stupid, odd, lovely (Drumless)(1441321) &#8211; Ponetto<\/a> <\/section> <\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There we saw an autonomous system that was interacting with the environment and learning through reinforcement. This allows them to complete an extended sequence of maneuvers. We also saw how these  systems were disturbing the peace. Systems that were <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s11191-024-00504-4\">opaque, uncertain and emergent<\/a>. On the ether pad I posted links to Sophia Tung&#8217;s video stream. And asked participants to answer the following three  questions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What\u2019s going on?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are self driving cars going to work?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You&#8217;ve had a seed of doubt or you might be wondering about? <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chat conversation was fabulous and  comments were both funny and insightful and we laughed a lot. My favourite one was about Steve from Boksburg. Who decided to service his own self driving car and the chaos that might ensue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I hoped that participants would begin thinking practically about Ai literacy, its purposes and the circumstances where it was important. I pointed out that Sophia Tung had been articulate and digitally literate to highlight that Waymo Cars (Google&#8217;s autonomous car system) was not working in her environment. She demonstrated her literacy on her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/h53xlXu_6C4\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/h53xlXu_6C4\">Youtube livestream<\/a> and community chat (the above <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@curiosior\/video\/7401123624666615071\">TikTok<\/a> is one of the reactions to her self driving cars stream).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> When it comes to education and technology, I also think that we need to be critical about all autonomous systems. I adopt the following perspective&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> &#8220;there is absolutely no inevitability as long as there is a willingness to contemplate what is happening\u201d <\/p>\n<cite>\u2014 Marshall McLuhan,&nbsp;<em>The Medium is the Massage<\/em><br><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We then switched our focus from the future of driving (automated cars), to the future of teaching (education technologies). I asked participants to think about some grand technological visions. Like <a href=\"https:\/\/weblearning.co.za\/blog\/making-sense-of-moocs-at-wits\/\">MOOCS<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/whats-wrong-with-the-fourth-industrial-revolution-188255\">4IR<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AI_in_education\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AI_in_education\">Ai in Education<\/a>. Ask ourselves similar questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What\u2019s going on?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is education technology going to work?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You&#8217;ve had a seed of doubt or you might be wondering about?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You the StoryTeller <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our ether pad conversation then shifted then from self driving cars, education technology and onto ourselves, who would be telling our stories. I asked participants to describe themselves on the etherpad and how they pointed towards their digital selves. I asked a few questions and again we had some interesting replies.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What seven words would you use to introduce yourself as an academic to ANOTHER academic in an online space<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you had to create a sign post to your corner of the web? What would you write on the signpost<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If someone asked you \u201cIsn\u2019t it narcism to put out your profile on the web?\u201d, how would you answer them?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also began to think about complicated words we use. Like <strong>\u201cartificial intelligence\u201d<\/strong>, <strong>\u201cmachine learning\u201d<\/strong> or <strong>hallucinations<\/strong>. I suggested that we don&#8217;t always think about what these words mean and the implications behind those terms in our understanding of technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our conversation was rich and engaging. And during this time I had been wearing my authentic french beret. But now it was time to look at our other story and put on my Woolworths beret.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1 | <strong>STOP<\/strong>  &#8211; Ai should have a health warning<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just like many people once smoked, and didn&#8217;t consider the damage that was being done to their lungs or the people around them. I think that AI also should also have a health warning. Being knowledgeable requires time to combine words and language. We do research, add our experience and develop the capacity to articulate our thoughts. We become literate with pictures, words language and numbers. Becoming literate is hard hard work. Technologies have a history of making us seem both knowledgeable and knowledge-able. These tools and artifacts are helpful, but are also more than neutral things. They shape what we write, read and think. Impact what we perceive and do. Have a history. And so I felt that I did not get round to showing some of these excellent constructionist activities that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middlebury.edu\/digital-learning-and-inquiry\/tom-woodward\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.middlebury.edu\/digital-learning-and-inquiry\/tom-woodward\">Tom Woodward<\/a> (I think) and the team created. I did however, haul out the ChatGPT. And showed participants, how I could get a story generated about me,   using a prompt or two. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[INSERT Video about prompting]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Time began to run out, and I had not really finished part 3 and part 4. (See below). So I rounded the my workshop off with Postman &amp; Weingartner&#8217;s Teaching as a subversive activity and a small video <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Steps to becoming a more subversive teacher\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q0WIgQSJ67o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/q0WIgQSJ67o\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/q0WIgQSJ67o<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was lots that I did not say in the workshop. I would have loved to cover the following two points<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3 | FIND OUT<\/strong> &#8211; The Do\u2019s and Don&#8217;ts When Using ChatGPT &amp; Similar LLMs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4 | TRACE BACKWARDS<\/strong>&nbsp; &#8211; What\u2019s your digital story. Are you the autonomous narrator of your Ai story? Or is your &#8220;tech-positive&#8221; story narrated for you? Are you crafting stories from your story telling toolkit, or is the platform shaping your story?
