Strange to be looking back. Personally and professionally, has not much changed? Still independent. Still struggling. Seems like I&#8217;m going around in circles. Just a bit faster each time! This is what I wrote in my draft introduction to event:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Elearning Update (#elud) delivered two days of stimulating discussions, a wide variety of presentations and a buffet of ideas. As always, Johannes assembles a wide range of interesting and experienced speakers for this South African elearning community.&nbsp; After two days worth of tweeting, over 150 tweets were gathered under the hashtag #elud&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tweets from 12 years ago<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Priority of CEO&#8217;s in the corporate sector. 24% (2003) 31% (2008). Most blended learning is mixed media.<br>Challenge &#8211; design an e-learning interface that will allow the students to change their mental model to match a conceptual model.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We have been pulled into so much formal skills development that we are lagging badly behind on informal learning, says Willie<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>So @johannes, will instructional designers be ultimately to blamed when the university becoming only a certification body<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>My fav quote for the day: &#8220;Are you in Education?&#8221; &#8211; Guillaume (lol)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I agree fully with Andre: we should stop the free v propriety &#8220;wars&#8221; and focus on what we can learn together about implementation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The secret of any successful LMS is a dedicated Champion\/Implementer who takes ownership!!! #elud<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cost of exit level is higher than the cost of entry level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bypass your IT department with a Moodle implementation and a restricted URL<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From 2010 to 2022<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At one of the early e-learning updates, Johannes presented me with a &#8220;Weaver D&#8217;s&#8221; T-shirt with &#8220;Automatic For The People&#8221; written on it. Backstory is that I went to Athens Georgia, and didn&#8217;t visit Thomas Reeves, professor of learning design. He was shocked! I was just too intimidated. Didn&#8217;t really have much to say. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> &#8220;Automatic for the people&#8221; was the name of a diner in Athens. It was also the name of an album by REM. The title was appropriate for us e-learning folk. Back then, in 2010. When we thought that the fix to education was with ICT diffusion across the country. Computer centres for the people. Remember those ICT centres in rural areas? Today, they&#8217;re no longer a concept? Our current focus seems to be on automated solutions. Many seem to think that a sprinkling of AI fairy dust will transform our society? Hoping that the so called &#8220;4th Industrial Revolution&#8221; will bring about fundamental changes. I&#8217;m a little more jaded these days!&nbsp;But that doesn&#8217;t stop me from attending. And I&#8217;m a little less reluctant to share my perspective. I&#8217;m on the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What I&#8217;m going to be doing at ELUD 2022<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m going to be presenting (via Zoom) at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/capelearning\/programme?authuser=0https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/capelearning\/programme?authuser=0\" target=\"_blank\">ELUD 2022<\/a>. My topic is about the need for a local <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1CAjXH8Blqv9wkcbk1EOpzeqR-y8bWR_siXW49tsQucc\/edit?usp=sharing\">Professional Association<\/a> for third space professionals. Some type of guild or organization to represent people who work in this area. Here&#8217;s the abstract<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a large and diverse community of practitioners in South Africa who have a shared interest in education and technology. But this loose grouping of ed tech professionals, do not have a professional membership body with legitimacy to readily guide and influence for the public good in educational institutions when it comes to digital design choices and decisions. The rapid growth and interest in ed tech means that a number of bad actors have stepped into this arena. I see a need for this community of practitioners to establish a professional association and establish a set of professional norms that will grant ethical practitioners with legitimacy for their work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will also post the Tweet stream after the conference.
