This initiative, run from the University of Nova Gorica, Vipava, Slovenia, is intended to unlock the potential of open education to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Developers, mentors and hub co-ordinators that participate, commit themselves and their efforts (for six months) to

develop, reuse and adapt open resources (sometimes known as OER’s, but not always)

follow open education practices (OEP) to make critical inquiry, agency, equal access, social justice, equity possible.

widen access and participation in education by making learning materials accessible, customizable, editable and abundant.

OE4BW combines their mentorship approach with OER, OEP and Open. Mentors and mentees become engaged in co-creation, discovery and development of knowledge and capabilities. Mentorship is seen as a means to elicit open expertise. This is human (not technology) driven education.

The programme that takes a curious (and global) approach to capacity and capability. Mentors offer themselves as relationship builders. They are facilitators of conversations, co-architects for change, ethical designers, inspiring (and aspiring) examples. Developers enter into a reciprocal arrangement with mentors. Each take responsibility for supporting a self identified trajectory. And then caring for the success of each other the academic project.

This year I have been been acting as a mentor for Vicky Avinash Oojorah and Waaiza Udhin from Mauritius. They signed up for the OE4BW project at the end of 2022. They have been producing an open resource entitled – Social Media and Digital Well Being. Our mentor relationship began at he beginning of 2023, with a mentorship charter. This is where Vicky and Waaiza started their six months mentorship journey with me. I was very please to see what they put together for our mini conference (see below).

Social Media and Digital WellbeingDownload

Mentorship is different from a professional development course. This is not a place where you complete a checklist of skills on a tickbox sheet in a workshop. Or work towards pre-defined outcomes. There’s no certificate. Or badge. Mentorship is a place where mentors and developers make inputs towards a capstone project. They openly own and share, their experience, give and receive empathy, enjoy ongoing encouragement and feel more empowered to boost their mutual efforts.

Mentorship is what you make of it. It’s a place for shared effort. This is where developers can define the criteria for their own success. And then be measured against those criteria. In education, I think that mentorships can act as catalyst for personal and systemic change. When those who commit to it choose ethics and care. This is a relationship where you become involved and build. Develop confidence and capacity with the best interests for your protégé and his/her future. Realizing the potential of mentorship, is in the partners hands.

–

References

Drevensek, M., & Urbancic, T.
