{"id":478,"date":"2010-09-30T10:44:48","date_gmt":"2010-09-30T08:44:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.weblearning.co.za\/blog\/?p=478"},"modified":"2024-08-27T15:30:12","modified_gmt":"2024-08-27T13:30:12","slug":"plans-for-open-access-week-at-wits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/weblearning.co.za\/blog\/plans-for-open-access-week-at-wits\/","title":{"rendered":"Plans for Open Access Week at Wits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/weblearning.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/logo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-520\" title=\"Open Access \" src=\"https:\/\/weblearning.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/logo-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Denise Nicholason and I have been working together to create a programme to celebrate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openaccessweek.org\/\">Open Access week<\/a> (18 &#8211; 22 October) here at <a href=\"http:\/\/web.wits.ac.za\/\">Wits University<\/a>, with a series of lunchtime seminars promoting openness \u2013 including Open Access, Open Educational Resources (OER), Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and Open Data.<\/p>\n<p>The seminars include the following themes:<\/p>\n<p>18 Oct &#8211;\u00a0 Openness \u2013 the key to creating a culture of innovation at Wits<br \/>\n19 Oct\u00a0 &#8211; Publishing Smart &#8211; Tools that\u00a0maximize\u00a0scholarly impact<br \/>\n20 Oct\u00a0 &#8211; Open Education\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 Openness and educational resources<br \/>\n21 Oct\u00a0 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.righttoresearch.org\/\">The Right to Research <\/a>\u2013 an activists guide to\u00a0Open Access<br \/>\n22 Oct\u00a0 &#8211; What are you doing about Open Access?<\/p>\n<p>Presentations and discussions will take place during the lunch hour and will be aimed at raising awareness about the concept of openness.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We want to promote participation in a local, national and international communities of practice that share an open attitude<\/li>\n<li>We also want to help local academics and students here at Wits to realise that they can make open choices when publishing research, creating or using digital media.<\/li>\n<li>We want to give participants the opportunity to familiarise themselves with a range of teaching techniques often associated with open resources (podcasts, blogs, web video etc).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We would love to have you attend our programme and if you can recruit participants using the <a href=\"https:\/\/weblearning.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Open_Access_promo.pdf\">Open Access Promo Presentation<\/a>, all the better.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to\u00a0show case some \u00a0open initiatives\u00a0here at WITS\u00a0please\u00a0notify me and we&#8217;ll be very\u00a0happy to\u00a0demonstrate your project, research or work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Denise Nicholason and I have been working together to create a programme to celebrate Open Access week (18 &#8211; 22 October) here at Wits University, with a series of lunchtime seminars promoting openness \u2013 including Open Access, Open Educational Resources (OER), Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and Open Data.
